THE ARTIST - MJ Okawa

I believe in the transformative power of stories—stories that help us dream, reflect, and imagine, filling us with awe and joy. My art is my way of sharing those stories, with each piece infused with vibrant colors, rich textures, and boundless energy. My work celebrates the natural world's beauty, blending traditional techniques with contemporary flair to create pieces that are joyful and truly unique.

With over 20 years of experience as a Visual & Performing Arts Specialist and educator, my artistic journey has been both diverse and deeply rewarding. As the Producing Artistic Director for Copperstar Repertory Co. in Arizona and Artworks in California, I’ve founded impactful arts organizations, led productions and camps, and fostered creative communities. This rich background in storytelling, performance, and visual arts has shaped my approach to creating artwork that uplifts and inspires.

Recently, I’ve had the honor of exhibiting my art in galleries across the United States and online platforms worldwide. The warm reception has been a joyful surprise, and I’m deeply grateful to be part of spaces that unite art and people. Okawa Arts is a family endeavor, run alongside my husband of over 30 years, Dave Okawa. Together, we live in the East Valley and are proud parents of two amazing adult children who now work in the arts.

My values—love, empathy, truth, and a commitment to inclusivity—guide my path as an artist and arts administrator. I believe art connects us, sparks meaningful conversations, and brings light and joy into the world. I am dedicated to creating inclusive spaces where all voices, especially those traditionally underrepresented, are celebrated.

Driven by a lifelong love for the arts, I aim to create pieces that bring beauty and meaning to others’ lives. Through my work, I hope to inspire and remind us of the profound beauty surrounding and within us. Together, let’s tell stories that uplift, connect, and spark imagination.
